Flours with high protein content

Varied kinds of flours do not have the same nutritional profile. Many kinds of flours have higher protein content than others. Apart from wheat flour, other kinds of flours made from soy or ground legumes can also have high protein content. Some of the types of high protein flour have been discussed here.

Wheat flour

High protein wheat flour can provide as much as 362 calories per 100 grams. The protein content can be as high as 15 gm. There is also a new kind of wheat high protein flour in the market with a protein content of 45 gm. The carbohydrate content of this type of flour is 35 gm, which is less than the protein content. Fat content is the just 5 gms. Ingredients used in making this kind of high protein wheat flour include Amarnath seeds, flax seeds, red rice, jackfruit, isolated pea protein, isolated wheat protein and oat groats.

High protein wheat flour is used to make dense brick-like cakes, muffins, and quick bread. It can also be used to make rotis.

Wheat flour protein lacks some essential amino acids.

Soy Flour

Soy flour is another high protein flour produced from soybeans. Soybeans are devoid of gluten, which makes it suitable for a gluten-free diet. 100 grams of soy flour contain about 47 gm of protein, 38 gm of carbohydrates and 1 gm of fat. A protein present in soy has all the essential amino acids making it a complete protein. Furthermore, the isoflavones present in the flour provides protection against heart disease and alleviate symptoms of menopause. Bread and muffins made using soy flour have different textures, appearances, and tastes than conventional ones.

Garbanzo bean flour

Garbanzo bean flour is produced from dried garbanzo beans. This type of flour is free of gluten. 120 gm of garbanzo bean flour contains 24 gm of protein, 72 gm of carbohydrates and 8 gm of fat. The energy content is 440 calories. Garbanzo bean flour cannot be used to replace wheat flour. The protein present in this kind of flour is not complete.

Quinoa flour

Quinoa flour is made from quinoa seeds. The protein content per cup of quinoa flour is 16 gm. The calorie content of quinoa flour is also more than wheat, buckwheat flour, and soy flour. It is commonly used to replace a small amount of flour in many recipes such as homemade pasta.
