Five Habits That Can Exacerbate Hair Thinning in Men

Most men start to lose hair at the age of 50, but others experience male pattern baldness from the age of 21. If this is true for you, it is likely that you’ll show significant signs of hair loss by the time you are 35. This makes it even more important to look after your locks and use the right products that can reduce hair loss in order to keep what hair you still have for as long as you can. This also means avoiding habits that can aggravate balding and hair thinning.

It is important to note that seemingly harmless habits can put additional stress on your hair and accelerate hair loss. Drying your hair with a rough towel, for instance, causes serious damage that may hurt the survival chances of newly emerging hair strands. The same is also true for scratching your scalp or having dandruff. This can damage the hair cuticle, making it more prone to thinning.

Here are a few other hair don’ts if you’re starting to go bald:

  1. Washing Your Hair Daily

Apart from drying your hair and scalp, using too much shampoo and conditioner on a daily basis can also cause temporary hair loss. Washing too often, furthermore, strips away essential oils and breaks down the natural structure of the hair. While you don’t need to wash your hair every day, be sure not to skip regular showers. Wet and rinse your hair with clean water, but don’t shampoo it daily.

  1. Excessive Combing or Brushing

Combing or brushing too much, especially aggressively, puts additional physical stress on your hair. This is why it is best to use your fingertips or hands when grooming and hairstyling, while following the scalp’s original growth pattern. You might also want to cut your hair short, as keeping it long will only make hair loss or thinning more noticeable.

  1. Covering up Hair Thinning

Experts agree that wearing a hat daily will not cause you to go bald, but it can cause problems if you are already losing your hair. Wearing a tight hat, for instance, could reduce circulation to the head, leading to deadened follicles. Using a hat all the time, furthermore, causes hair to look flattened and thinner. It is also important to note that dirty caps or hats can contribute to scalp infection and aggravate hair loss.

  1. Having a Poor/Restrictive Diet

A poor or restrictive diet negatively affects how your hair looks. Note that quick weight loss from a strict meal plan can also cause hair loss due to vitamin deficiency. This makes it important to fix your diet and eat nutrient-rich foods. Choose foods that are rich in iron, protein, B vitamins, zinc, and other minerals. You could consider taking supplements, but the best source for required nutrients is a balanced diet.

  1. Doing Nothing About Hair Loss

Losing a few hair strands is normal, but if you experience hair thinning or extensive shedding, this is a sign of a more serious problem. When you start to lose more hair than usual, it is best to seek early treatments. Visit a hair clinic to learn more about safe and effective solutions for hair regrowth and stopping baldness. You can use hair restoration product kits or consider in-house treatments that can boost hair regrowth and promote follicular regeneration.
